Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise

A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

"Evil Dead Rise" takes place inside a building instead of a cabin in the woods. It’s not the first installment of the franchise to change that setting, but it’s the first one to do so with entirely new characters. Therefore, it doesn’t rehash its predecessors (which is much appreciated, especially in this day and age). Unfortunately, it rehashes itself. It’s so repetitive that I felt like I was watching the same scene over and over. Another noticeable addition to the formula is that it’s centered around a family, but the concept is wasted. Based on the fates of the characters and the way they react to tragic events, I’m pretty sure the plot wouldn’t have been that much different if it had been a group of friends (or a group of friends where some of them are relatives) as usual. Alyssa Sutherland’s performance is good, but the other cast members are passable at best, and a lot of the horror and/or comedy sequences aren’t effective.
